"Do you have any questions for us?" is not a formality. It's an opportunity — and most candidates waste it.

The questions you ask signal how you think, what you value, and whether you've done your homework. Asking "What does a typical day look like?" signals junior thinking. Asking "What's the biggest obstacle the team is facing right now that this hire is meant to solve?" signals strategic thinking.

Here are 12 questions that work, organized by what they reveal about you.

Questions That Show Strategic Thinking

1. "What does success look like for this role in the first 90 days?" This tells you exactly what they need and lets you speak to it directly. It also reveals whether they've thought clearly about the role.

2. "What's the biggest challenge the team is facing right now that this hire is meant to address?" Hiring managers love this question. It shows you're thinking about impact, not just responsibilities.

3. "How does this role connect to the company's top priorities for the year?" Shows you think about alignment and context, not just your own lane.

Questions That Show You've Done Your Research

4. "I noticed you recently [launched X / raised Y / expanded into Z]. How has that changed the team's priorities?" Demonstrates genuine preparation. Customize this for every interview.

5. "Your competitor [Company] recently [did something]. How does your team think about that?" Shows competitive awareness. Use carefully — don't be combative.

Questions That Reveal Culture and Management

6. "How would you describe the management style of the person I'd be reporting to?" If they struggle to answer this, that's information.

7. "Can you tell me about someone who's thrived in this role — what made them successful?" Reveals what the team actually values vs. what's in the job description.

8. "How does the team handle disagreement or conflict?" Healthy teams have a real answer. Unhealthy teams give a PR answer.

Questions That Show Long-Term Thinking

9. "What does the career path look like for someone in this role?" Signals ambition and commitment. Also tells you if there's a ceiling.

10. "What's your own favorite thing about working here?" Gets a genuine, personal answer. Watch for hesitation.

Questions That Close Strong

11. "Is there anything about my background that gives you pause? I'd love the chance to address it." Brave question. Rarely asked. Gives you a chance to handle objections directly.

12. "What are the next steps in the process?" Always ask this. Always. It shows you're serious and gives you a timeline for follow-up.

How Many to Ask

Prepare 6–8 questions. You'll typically get to ask 3–4. Prioritize based on what came up in the conversation — the best questions are the ones that follow naturally from what was discussed.

Never ask about salary, benefits, or time off in a first interview. Save those for when they've decided they want you.
